The Burrow is a sculptural shade installation designed and fabricated by The Guild as part of ¡Sombra! Experiments in Shade, a temporary art initiative that transforms public spaces into cooling urban retreats. Inspired by the Desert Tortoise—an iconic species that digs burrows to escape the desert heat—this interactive structure provides a playful refuge for Phoenix residents while promoting environmental awareness and climate adaptation strategies.

Crafted with precision and sustainability in mind, The Burrow’s form and materials reflect the tortoise’s resilience. The shell-like canopy incorporates CNC-routed openings for optimized airflow, heat-reducing coatings to lower surface temperatures, and upcycled elements that reinforce its ecological message. Integrated solar-powered LED lighting ensures the structure remains an inviting landmark after sunset.

Artistic and cultural influences shape the installation’s aesthetic. The segmented “scutes” of the tortoise shell feature intricate patterns inspired by Phoenix’s historic canal system and indigenous storytelling, connecting visitors to the region’s deep environmental and cultural heritage. Recycled tire seating, sculpted to resemble barrel cacti, invites people of all ages to linger, learn, and engage with the space.

At 20 feet long, 14 feet wide, and 8 feet tall, The Burrow is both a cooling retreat and a conversation piece—an example of how design and fabrication can address urban heat challenges through creativity and community-focused solutions.
